Waterdog Lake Park Description
Waterdog Lake Park also known as “Waterdog” is located in Belmont. CA on the San Francisco Bay Area Peninsula and is one of its best kept secrets. Only minutes from Highways 280 and 100 just off Hwy 92 this park is nestled in the suburbs of Belmont, so who would expect acres and acres of some of the best open space on the peninsula. From the top of the ridge you are treated to some fantastic vistas of the Bay Area. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Transamerica building in San Francisco to the north and as you move south you can view Alameda, Berkeley, Mount Diablo, Stanford and Mount Hamilton as can be identified by the observatory perched on top of the peak. All of these views are accessible in as little as 1.5 mile hike or ride up to any distance you want to challenge yourself to with 14 trails in the park.
Most Popular!
This park is equally as popular with mountain bikers as it is with hikers and dogs. The majority of visitors are local and likely the reason why the two parties intermingle so well. For hikers there are a number of options from exposed fire roads to single track trails under the canopy. As the park is a canyon most trails involve some amount of climbing and descending in various degrees from trail to trail. Mountain Bikers can ride any trail in the park and they do. You will see bikers throughout the park. Rides in Waterdog are a mix of intermediate and advanced pursuits. First timers to Waterdog should know that a lot of the trails have their own little technical gotchas and lines. Take your first time slow and scout, then have a blast.
Things to know?
Poison Oak and Ticks are scattered throughout the park. The trails are very well maintained, but wander off and you may pay for it later.
Just outside the parking lot on Carlmont Rd. there is a water fountain available.
Mountain Bikers don’t miss the descent down Finch Trail which includes 21 switchbacks ! Wahoo !!! Switchbacks end at a narrow bridge over a gully. Don’t attempt this if you are a beginner rider or struggle with switchbacks. Also section of Elevator Trail and Rambler Trail contain fun but difficult descents with “eat a bike” two foot deep ruts.
