Muir Woods National Monument Description


Muir Woods National Monument is located just a few miles north of San Francisco. The thick redwood forests attract many tourists and visitors looking to learn about conservation and to experience the calmness of this rich coastal ecosystem. Seemingly quiet, the dark forests of Muir Woods harbor a large number of species, a majority of which are nocturnal. Bright colored banana slugs, multiple types of bats, owls, other birds and mammals are the permanent inhabitants of this enchanting forest.  Over 6 miles of trails in a couple of loops around the Muir Woods National Monument present an opportunity for a great hike among giant redwood trees. The trail system is also connected to the neighboring parks allowing for longer than 60-90 minute walks. Mountain biking and camping are not permitted in the park.  Those willing to actively participate in the Muir Woods park community can join the numerous events throughout the year ranging from volunteering to fun crafts workshops.
