Henry W. Coe State Park Description

Henry Coe State Park is located in Santa Clara County, California.  Henry Coe is the largest state park in northern California with rugged, varied and beautiful terrain.  The park is open around the clock every day of the year for hikers, mountain bikers, backpackers, equestrians, car campers, picnickers and photographers.  Henry Coe was once the home of the Ohlone Indians.  It is now home to a variety of plants and animals, including the mountain lion. Within the park are long stretches of Pacheco and Orestimba Creeks, the headwaters of Coyote Creek and a wilderness area.

The park has over 250 miles of hiking trails and old ranch roads that’s accessible year round.  Hikes range from a relatively flat leisurely stroll of a mile and a half to challenging backpacking loops of 50 miles or more with elevation changes of ten thousand feet.  Be sure to take plenty of water and food on your hikes.  Guide or volunteer led hikes are available in Henry Coe State Park.  Please check park website for more information.

The park offers over 200 miles of roads and trails to mountain bikers.  As the terrain is rugged, conditions range from moderately difficult to extremely difficult.  The less severe trails are Flat Frog Trail, Manzanita Point Road near the Coe Ranch entrance, and at the Hunting Hollow entrance Hunting Hollow Road and Coit Road are moderately steep.  Some trails do not permit bikes so be sure to know which trails are open to bikes and which trails are not.  Motorized bikes are not allowed within the park.

The park offers drive-in, tent primitive, backpacking and horse camping throughout the park.  While backpacking campsites are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, others can be reserved online.  Unless otherwise noted, please purify before consuming any water sourced within the park.  It is always a good idea to talk to park staff before heading out on a backpacking trip.  The park allows campers and trailers up to 22 feet and 20 feet, respectively.

Henry Coe Park has excellent fishing but there are no lakes or creeks one can drive to.  Beyond the relatively close-in lakes (Bass Pond and Frog Lake), getting to other fishing spots will mean elevation changes in thousands of feet.

The park is a wilderness paradise for equestrians but one should be prepared for steep, rugged terrain.  As mentioned previously, there are horse campsites available in Henry Coe.

Dogs are allowed in the main campground and on the paved road around the Visitor Center and one trail that connects the Visitor Center to the parking lot off E. Dunn Avenue.  Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed anywhere else in the park.
