El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve Description

El Corte De Madera Creek Open Space also known as “Skeggs” is located in Woodside, CA on the San Francisco peninsula and surrounded by a number of other parks such as Wunderlich County Park, Purisima Creek Redwoods Regional Open Space, Huddart County Park and many others along the scenic Skyline Drive.

Among the redwood and evergreen forests in the park are 36 miles of trails open for a variety of activities, but is dominated by the mountain biking community.  As one of the most popular destinations for mountain biking in the San Francisco Bay Area, Skeggs offers a variety of trails that range in difficulty and terrain to accommodate intermediate bikers, with some segments suitable for more advanced mountain biking. There is a large variety of trails suitable for great hiking, wildlife viewing, multitude of bridges and a couple of creeks.  In addition to hiking trails, El Corte De Madera offers equestrian trails though due to the popularity of mountain biking riders and the limited parking for trailered vehicles, riders seldom visit.

 Most Popular !
The most popular trails in the park are Fir trail, Tafoni trail, Resolution trail, Gordon Mill trail, and the recently opened Giant Salamander trail and El Corte De Madera Creek trail.

Things to know ?

* El Corte de Madera is located on the west side of Skyline Ridge and exposed to the Pacific.  Weather here can be as much as 20 degrees colder and much windier than the east side of the ridge.  When coming to Skeggs make sure that you pack your layers as the weather can make a good day bad very quickly.

* At one time this park had an adventure race entitled “a maze” as the park is a large bowl with a large network of criss-crossing trails.  After more than ten years in this park I can still get turned around.  Make sure that if this is not a park that you frequent that you have a map of the park with you to ensure your visit is pleasant and safe.
